Medicine isn’t just about diagnoses and procedures—it’s about people. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that one of the most powerful tools a physician has is the ability to listen.
My father, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist, always reminded me that “God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason.” As physicians, we are often eager to provide solutions, but the first step in effective patient care is truly understanding the concerns, fears, and goals of those we treat.
One of my most memorable experiences involved a patient with a known difficult airway. Careful preparation, collaboration with my surgical team, and proactive communication ensured that we navigated the case successfully. That experience reinforced a core principle in medicine: good planning prevents bad outcomes.
Every patient interaction is an opportunity to learn and improve. Whether it’s a complex procedure or a simple conversation, the way we approach patient care has lasting effects on both outcomes and trust.
