Transitioning from anesthesiology to pain management was one of the most pivotal decisions of my career. After years of training, I found myself at a crossroads—should I continue in general anesthesia or dedicate myself fully to pain medicine? The decision wasn’t just about career trajectory; it was about impact.
Anesthesia taught me the intricacies of perioperative care, crisis management, and the delicate balance of keeping patients comfortable and safe. Pain management, however, allowed me to work longitudinally with patients, addressing their conditions beyond the operating room. It was a shift from momentary intervention to long-term care, and the challenge excited me.
Now, in my current role, I blend both skill sets—leveraging my anesthesia background to enhance pain management strategies while still maintaining my clinical anesthesiology practice through locum work. The ability to adapt has been essential, and this transition has reinforced my belief that medicine is a lifelong journey of learning and growth.
